Indian Classical
Music
Music is the art that permeates every
human society, in one form or another. Many famous philosophers
recognised its association with the soul. A universal art, it has
been attributed the power to have healing powers, to help crops
grow, to cause cows to yield more milk and to create rain and to
light lamps. Such is its relationship to the human and animal senses
and nature as a whole.
Indian classical tradition is unique
because it has a long unbroken, though continuously evolving record
since the Vedic times, about 4000 years ago. It has developed over
the centuries into a music of profound melodic and rhythmic intricacy,
through the Guru-Shishya Parampara (Teacher-Student tradition).
In this tradition an aspiring musician apprentices himself to a
guru, lives with him, serves him with devotion and learns from him
in total humility. It is a very close relationship, a spiritual
discipline, a path of realisation, in which the singing and playing
of instruments becomes a spiritual exploration and an endeavour
towards harmony of the individual being with the all-pervading reality.
The essence of Indian Classical Music
is the art of improvisation, using the fundamental interplay between
swara (notes) and tala (rhythm). The infinite variety of ragas and
the unbelievable complexities of Indian rhythm patterns, together
with an amazing assortment of vocal techniques and instruments of
all classes, have produced a genre of music, that has engaged brilliant
musicians and demanding listeners for centuries.
A Few Words
about the
Virasat Foundation
Virasat Foundation is an organization dedicated to preserve and promote the
rich culture, traditions and heritage of India. Virasat means what belongs
to all of us, what has been handed over to us by earlier generations and
that which we have to hold on to and pass on to the next generations. It is
this Virasat, that makes us what we are and will contribute to our next
generation what they are. Our mission is to preserve, promote and develop
what is best in Virasat in its full grandeur and hand over to our coming
generations a treasure greater than what our last generations handed over
to us. This includes providing a climate for holding concerts and various
social activities, perpetuating the cultural aspects such as Indian
classical music, folk music, fine arts, etc., conducting educational
programs, promoting Indian languages and traditional medicines and other
services to the people.
